Sleep No More Shanghai guide

Hi my lovely readers!

If you take away one single thing from my entire Shanghai trip, let it be this: go see 不眠之夜 (Bùmián Zhī Yè / Sleep No More). The first time I went, I went in knowing almost nothing and came out already thinking about going back.

It is a silent, immersive retelling of Macbeth (麦克白, Màikè Bái), set in 1930s Shanghai inside the fictional 麦金侬酒店 (Màijīnnóng Jiǔdiàn / McKinnon Hotel). No seats, no narration, no dialogue. Just you, a white mask, and five floors with over 90 rooms to explore while the story plays out live around you. It has been running since 2016 for good reason. Rated NC16, so under 16s are not permitted.

Adventure Spirit or Wandering Spirit? Pick the right ticket first.

There are two ticket tiers and they are not fully the same experience, so read this before you book.

Adventure Spirit (冒险幽灵, Màoxiǎn Yōulíng) is the pricier option and comes with exclusive pre-show scenes before the main narrative begins. You enter the Manderley Bar earlier, collect a lower-numbered poker card (Ace to Six), and are sent up to the higher floors first, which puts you right where the preshow story starts. This pre-show content does not directly tie in with the main narrative, but it sets the mood and you will eventually be led toward one of the main characters. For a first timer, the extra immersion is worth it.

Wandering Spirit (漫游幽灵, Mànyóu Yōulíng) is the standard tier. You queue from around 2:30pm but only enter the bar from about 3:05pm. Your card runs from Seven upward, and the elevator operator decides which floor to drop you on, often the lower floors near the ballroom rather than the upper floors where the story begins. You still see the full show, just without the pre-show scenes and you might miss the start of the ballroom dance since you’ll be in the latter batches.

Tip: If this is your first time, go for the Adventure Spirit. The price gap is not huge and the experience is better.

What to Expect on the Day

The show runs two-ish loops (they removed the first loop in 2025, so if you have seen older guides referencing three loops, that is outdated). The dining room scenes are still the anchor moments that signal the end of each loop. Refer to the map later on in the post.

I recommend arriving 30 to 45 minutes early. We got there at 1:45pm for a 2:30pm show, and we got the Adventure Spirit tickets.

Put your bags in the lockers when you arrive but hold onto your ticket and phone for now, you will need them to collect your poker card.

Lower card numbers go in first, so earlier arrival gives you a better chance at a lower number. By arriving at the time we did, we got the Ace and Two cards.

Staff will lead you through a dark tunnel into the hotel. No jump scares, just atmosphere to help you enter the world of The McKinnon Hotel. Inside the Manderley Bar, there will be a live performance while everyone gathers. You can also come out here for a quick break if you get tired in between, though I never thought about this at all, being so immersed in the performances.

When your card number is called, you lock your phone, card, and ticket into a small pouch, step into the lift, and the experience begins.

Tip: Wear contact lenses if you can, the white mask sits over glasses awkwardly. And wear comfortable shoes, you will easily clock 15,000 steps going up and down stairs across five floors.

Who to Follow

Start with 麦克白 (Màikè Bái / Macbeth) or 麦克白夫人 (Màikè Bái Fūren / Lady Macbeth) for your first visit. Use the dining room scene as your anchor, the two leads sit at opposite ends of the table, and follow from there. The narrative clicks much faster once you have that reference point. See the above for a quick reference.

If you lose them, don’t stress. Just stay in the spot, chances are, someone will be coming past and you can follow that person. Every character has a compelling loop, and the Legend of the White Snake (白蛇传, Bái Shé Zhuàn) was woven into the storyline, which adds a distinctly Shanghai layer to the show. Read a quick Macbeth summary before you go, you do not need it but it helps you read the scenes faster.

The 1v1 Moments

This is the part that makes people come back. Occasionally, an actor will pull one single audience member into a completely private scene. No warning. No script. Just you and them.

I got one by accident. A lady character in green, holding a briefcase, reached out, led me into a private moment, and during that 1v1 interaction, she gave me a pendant around my neck and I even got to keep it. This happened on Level 4 just as she came up the stairs from the levels below.

I also had two separate interactions with 麦克白夫人 (Màikè Bái Fūren / Lady Macbeth). In the first, she kissed the back of my hand with a bloodied nose, then led me to a fountain and helped me wash the blood off. It sounds intense when written down but in the moment, it felt completely natural. In the second, she dropped her necklace and I helped her put it back on, then Macbeth came. That is the magic of this show.

Tip: When an actor reaches their hand out, take it. Do not overthink it. The braver you are, the more you unlock. If it’s not your first time here, don’t spend the whole night chasing Macbeth, the smaller side characters often have the 1v1 moments. Wander, and let the show find you.

1v1 Moments Worth Knowing About

These are shared by other audience members and not guaranteed, but knowing they exist can help you be in the right place.

The bartender scene: after a dance near the tailor shop, head upstairs to find the bartender watching a card game. Linger. Just before the game ends, a hidden door appears and they will pull you in for a private card magic trick.

The detective scene: after the ball, follow the detective back to his agency room. He will 壁咚 (bì dōng / wall pin) one audience member against the wall, whisper a small story to them, and then crack an egg in their hand. Yes, an actual egg. It is as unexpected as it sounds.

The nurse scene (There’s a chance here if you’ve got the ticket for Adventure Spirit and received the Ace cards): right at the very start, before the main show begins, two nurses may find you and ask if you are lost. Say yes. They will bring you to a small hidden room, tell you a story about a little boy, and feed you ginger tea. It is gentle and completely disarming, and if you get this one on your first visit, consider yourself lucky.

The male witch scene: he will tease the crowd three times, offering his poker card as he dances. Twice with his hands. The third time, with his mouth. Watch him carefully or you will miss the moment he offers the card. I actually got this interaction too but didn’t grab the card because of saliva. But if you don’t mind, then go for it.

The 白蛇 (Bái Shé / White Snake) scene: this is technically a 1v2 moment. Nurses will clear the hospital ward and 白蛇 will enter and choose two audience members by wrapping her arms around you. You will follow her through a treatment scene and at one point, be brought under the bed to watch the performance from below, which is exactly as surreal as it sounds. Do note this scene has flashing lights and dark spaces, so skip it if either of those is an issue for you.

The pharmacy scene is said to be one of the rarest unlocks in the building. After Lady Macbeth showers and heads downstairs, do not follow her. Instead, go to the pharmacy on Level 5 and find the nurse there. When she starts moving toward the bamboo forest, she will reach out. Take her hand and do not hesitate. This unlocks Level 6, which most people never get to visit, even with multiple visits.

The phone booth scene: after Lady Macbeth tries to drug the King and both leave the room, stay exactly where you are. Watch the Bellboy and the male witch performing near the telephone booths. The female witch will arrive, and she will pull one person into the booth with her. If you are there and you make eye contact, that person might be you.

If You Are Travelling Solo

This is the best activity to go solo. Staff will try to split any group up anyway, so you won’t be the only one running around by yourself. I personally feel that going solo is the better way to experience this. You are faster, freer, and far more likely to have a 1v1 moment. Most importantly, it is easier to keep up with the actors as they move fast and swift. Plus, it’s also less intimidating with the mask on.
