THE BEST 12 DAYS IN JAPAN FOR ANY FIRST TIMER

by | Dec 11, 2023 | JAPAN, TRAVEL | 0 comments

Hi my lovely readers.

I’ve recently just returned from a trip to Japan and finally got what the hype is all about. It is such a beautiful and fun place to be in. I can’t wait for my next trip back already.

This was one of the best times to visit Japan as it was not too cold to walk around but it was nice enough if you wanna dress up with a coat or even a T-shirt when you feel like it.

Here’s what I did on my trip.

All prices indicated will be estimated at SGD1 = ¥100 for easy calculation.

OSAKA

DAY 1 [RINKU PREMIUM OUTLETS, LUKE’S LOBSTER, DOTONBORI – 10 YEN PANCAKES, WAGYU BEEF STICKS, TAKOYAKI, TANG HULU, GLICO MAN, DON QUIJOTE]

Our first stop of the day was to head to Riku Premium Outlet after we landed. This outlet is only one train stop away from Kansai Airport and hosts multiple stores separated into 2 sections.

Tip: Look carefully at the platform LED boards indicating the trains you’re taking from. The platform you are waiting at may be correct but the train that approaches may not stop at the station you intend to alight at. Read carefully before boarding or ask for help from the locals. Express trains are different from local trains. Trains are always on time, board the train that is indicated on your Google Maps.

RIKU PREMIUM OUTLET 3-28 Rinkuoraiminami, Izumisano, Osaka 598-8508, Japan

We put our luggage into the coin lockers at the train station as we didn’t want to lug them to the shops. The bigger coin lockers that can fit the checked-in luggage are ¥800 (~SGD 8).

As Japan seems to have a bigger golf culture, there were many stores and discounts to snag a good pair of Golf Shoes and other golf apparel!

We had lunch at Luke’s Lobster, where we could enjoy them on the little platforms with a huge umbrella in the middle.

LUKE’S LOBSTER Japan, 〒598-0047 Osaka, Izumisano, Rinkuoraiminami, 3−28 シーサイドエリア 1階

We moved into our Airbnb, in the Nipponbashi area, which is 15 minutes away from Dotonbori.

We went passed the famous 10 yen pancakes which served up pancakes with a generous block of cheese in its centre.

10円パン 1 Chome-2-2 Namba, Chuo Ward, Osaka, 542-0076, Japan

We Tried both Wagyu and Kobe beef from different stores which are both mouthwatering.

We also saw a long queue with a vlogger doing a live so thought it might have been good. It was some delicious takoyaki.

TAKOYAKI WANAKA DOTONBORI 1 Chome-6-7 Dotonbori, Chuo Ward, Osaka, 542-0086, Japan

Tip: If you see a long queue, chances are, the food must be good.

In between, we took a quick break and headed over to Glico Man. There’s a convenience store just opposite the river, where you can get a good photo op. Remember to come before 8pm to queue as the store closes slightly after 8pm!

GLICO MAN 1 Chome-10-3 Dotonbori, Chuo Ward, Osaka, 542-0071, Japan

Of course, we had to head over to the OG Don Don Donki of Japan where we got more snacks. Some snacks are found only in Osaka and have other versions in other cities.

DON QUIJOTE DOTONBORI 7-13 Souemoncho, Chuo Ward, Osaka, 542-0084, Japan

Finally, to end off the night, we got some tanghulu (Fruit coated with a thin layer of sugar coating) and cremia ice cream (soft serve wrapped in a cone).

DAY 2 [UNIVERSAL STUDIOS JAPAN, MATSUYA NIPPONBASHI]

We headed to Universal Studios Japan and there was a massive queue by the time we arrived at 8:15am. It opens at 8:30am.

Tip: Come here at least 1 hour earlier. While we were queuing to enter the park, we were already hearing screams on the roller coaster.

If you already have tickets, then head on to the left side to enter the park. Don’t have to join the queue in the middle to buy tickets.

Tip: get your to-go breakfast the day before and eat it while queuing

Otherwise, download the app and pick the timing for Nintendo World ASAP. You can also see the queue times for the rides on the app.

Tip: Ask their cast members for stickers and even little cards. But do remember to be respectful about it.

We got an express ticket as one of the rides was not working. And the general queue was closed already. We asked and the cast member was very accommodating to let us use the ticket to enjoy the ride. So it always never hurts to ask.

We headed for Sanrio and Sesame Street and Snoopy World.

We spent most of our time in Harry Potter World. We saw many magical activities, interaction with dragons, and unlocking of doors using spells.

Of course, while in Harry Potter, we had to get the butter beer, which we got both the hot and cold one. We much preferred the hot one. We also got it served in the souvenir mug for an extra 1400 (~ SGD 14) each. The castle in the background was just so beautiful.

The castle was an entrance to the Harry Potter ride, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. We queued close to 3 hours but it was a must visit ride. Thus, I would highly recommend getting the Universal Express pass and skipping the queue which is often 2 hours and you get guaranteed visits to Super Nintendo World and Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Alternatively, opt for the single rider which typically cuts the waiting time down by half or even more.

We had our lunch at three broom sticks.

Next, we queued for The Flying Dinosaur which is not for the faint hearted. We queued around 1 hour in the single rider queue. It was worth the queue for sure.

After, we stopped for some snacks at Minion Park, icecream sanwiches.

We spent the rest of the time, chilling before we headed for our allocated timeslot to Super Nintendo World. I was in awe by the entire atmosphere, I really felt like I was in the game. Everything built was so intricate, absolutely breathtaking. After taking photos, we queued single rider at the Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge which is not to be missed. It was super fun challenging my friends and driving as a team together.

We had some quick snacks at their cafeteria before they closed.

Our final ride was at Hollywood Dream – The Ride. We actually queued for the ride first thing in the morning for about an hour before they stopped for repair. We were given the express ticket as a result and made it last minute for the ride. Definitely another highlight in the park and a must take,

This is the summary of the must visit rides in USJ for the thrill seekers.

  1. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
  2. The Flying Dinosaur
  3. Hollywood Dream – The Ride
  4. Jurassic Park – The Ride
  5. Jaws
  6. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man
  7. Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge in Super Nintendo World

UNIVERSAL STUDIO JAPAN 2 Chome-1-33 Sakurajima, Konohana Ward, Osaka, 554-0031, Japan

For dinner, we went to our place. You can have an affordable and delicious dinner at Matsuya. I got myself some yakiniku-style meat. It’s open 24 hours so you’ll always have some food even when it gets late or early!

MATSUYA NIPPONBASHI Japan, 〒542-0073 Osaka, Chuo Ward, Nipponbashi, 1 Chome−3−2 コウジィアパートメント

DAY 3 [YAYOIKEN, OSAKA CASTLE, DAY TRIP TO NARA – DEER PARK, TODAIJI TEMPLE, NAKATANIDOU MOCHI, UDON KAMAIKI]

Today was a day trip out but we had to get some breakfast before that. So we went just opposite Matsuya.

YAYOIKEN 1 Chome-5-13 Nipponbashi, Chuo Ward, Osaka, 542-0073, Japan

It was our day in Osaka and yet we haven’t seen the iconic Osaka Castle. Hence, that was our first stop of the day. If you have a JR pass, you have a free visit to the castle!

OSAKA CASTLE 1-1 Osakajo, Chuo Ward, Osaka, 540-0002, Japan

Afterward, our day trip officially began. We took the train to Nara.

If you’re headed for Nara Park to see the cute deer, do get off at Kintetsu-Nara Station.

There are lots of snacks here so you can grab a bite before you head over.

As for food for the deer, along the way, you can see some vendors selling deer biscuits costing ¥200 – ¥300 (~ SGD 2 – SGD 3).

We wanted to come here but we saw that there was some construction happening around the area so we skipped it.

KOFUKU-JI GOJUNOTO (FIVE STORY PAGODA) 48 Noboriojicho, Nara, 630-8213, Japan

The deers were adorable and polite (at times).

We also got some snacks (My first Daifuku and Ice Cream in Japan) along the streets, on the way to the temple.

We had some great views of the autumn foliage here and some big fishes here.

TODAI-JI KAGAMI-IKE POND 406-1 Zoshicho, Nara, 630-8211, Japan

Further down is the temple and you can get some entrance tickets on the spot. Of course, you can avoid them by buying them online.

TODAI-JI 406-1 Zoshicho, Nara, 630-8587, Japan

Soon after, we headed back to the metro station to eat the famous Nara Mochi. Come here at 11am or 3pm for their Mochi Pounding demonstration.

NAKATANIDOU 29 Hashimotocho, Nara, 630-8217, Japan

Finally, we ended the night with some warm udon soup. There was a queue starting to form by the time the restaurant opened so be there early

UDON KAMAIKI 13-2 Higashimuki Minamimachi, Nara, 630-8216, Japan

KYOTO

DAY 4 [RIKURO’S CHEESECAKE, TRAVEL TO KYOTO, TAKAHASHI SOBA, NISHIKI MARKET – BEEF STICKS, SCALLOPS, ICHIGO DAIFUKU, SOY DONUTS, DISNEY AND SANRIO STORE, GION AREA, MUSOSHIN]

A quick run for some of the best Japanese cheesecake serving about ¥10k (~SGD 10).

We checked out of our Airbnb and were on our way to Kyoto!

We were hungry by the time we reached Kyoto and settled down so we had some local soba which was near our Airbnb. This was one of the best soba that we had on the trip!

TAKAHASHI SOBA 23 Hiraicho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, 600-8118, Japan

Nishiki Market is a famous food street in Kyoto and a must-visit if you’re a foodie.

The few must-buys are their beef sticks, scallops, Ichigo daifuku (which is much better than the Daifuku we had down the street) and soy donuts (which taste like pancakes but so delicious).

Note: don’t eat and walk at the same time as it can be dangerous with the constant crowd. Instead, eat at the place where you bought the snack or stand outside the store to eat before leaving. You can also ask the storekeeper to help dispose of your trash after you’re done.

NISHIKI MARKET Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, 604-8055, Japan

We headed back to the city centre and noticed a little girl with a cute Cinnamoroll plushie and had to head to the Sanrio store.

SANRIO GALLERY KYOTO Japan, 〒600-8002 Kyoto, Shimogyo Ward, Otabicho, 28

The Disney store is also not to be missed as well! Just a short distance away.

DISNEY STORE Japan, 〒600-8001 Kyoto, Shimogyo Ward, 四条通河原町 北東角 コトクロス阪急河原町 1&2F

Finally, we headed towards the GION district.

In the GION District, there are signs everywhere that prevent you from taking photos and videos of the area. We did see a Maiko headed to her next destination. So do take note while you’re in this area and respect them.

We were cold and hungry when we spotted this Michelin ramen store. They had some of the best ramen that we’ve had in Japan.

MUSOSHIN Japan, 〒605-0933 Kyoto, Higashiyama Ward, 大和大路四条下ル小松町558-2

DAY 5 [OZURU, FRIED CHICKEN STICK PLACE, KOTOIMO HONPO, ARASHIYAMA BAMBOO FOREST, TENRYUJI TEMPLE, Arashiyama Rilakkuma Tea House, Arashiyama Miffy Sakura Kitchen, KINKAKU-JI, NAKAU – KAWARAMACHI GOJO]

We started the day by visiting the Arashiyama Bamboo forest. As we noticed a crowd, we opted for some lunch instead and stopped at one of the udon noodle shops called Ozuru.

OZURU 22-4 Sagatenryuji Susukinobabacho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 616-8385, Japan

After putting our names on the waitlist, we went nearby to get their snacks while waiting. This was the best chicken that we’ve had on the trip and must get.

FRIED CHICKEN STICK PLACE 2-1, 2-1 Sagatenryuji Tateishicho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 616-8375, Japan

I was not a big fan of the dango as it was sweet and salty but the sweet potato fries were another favourite.

KOTOIMO HONPO 2-1 Sagatenryuji Tateishicho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 616-8375, Japan

Arashiyama Bamboo Forest started with a long walk into the forest which was filled with many tourists and locals. If you want, you can opt to take a 30-minute rickshaw ride into the forest which is hand-pulled. The kind guide would also help to take some photos in spots not accessible by the public.

ARASHIYAMA BAMBOO FOREST Sagaogurayama Tabuchiyamacho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 616-8394, Japan

Along the way, we also popped by some of the stores such as the Arashiyama Rilakkuma Tea House where they were serving up yummy sponge cake shaped as Rilakkuma. I also had even more strawberry Daifuku.

ARASHIYAMA RILAKKUMA TEA HOUSE 15 Sagatenryuji Kitatsukurimichicho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 616-8374, Japan

Down the road is the Arashiyama Miffy Sakura Kitchen where there’s a bakery serving the cutest miffy-themed pastries, although there’s a big queue to enter the bakery. I got some chopsticks at the store just next door.

ARASHIYAMA MIFFY SAKURA KITCHEN Japan, 〒616-8384 Kyoto, Ukyo Ward, Sagatenryuji Kitatsukurimichicho, 20 番 27

Our next stop was Tenryu-ji where we walked along a long path filled with beautiful trees that are in the beautiful autumn colours.

TENRYU-JI Japan, 〒616-8385 Kyoto, Ukyo Ward, Sagatenryuji Susukinobabacho, 68

After our quick trip, we made our way to Kinkaku-Ji which had one of the prettiest entrance tickets and the prettiest building as well.

As the sun sets pretty early at this time of the year, we had to rush down to the temple and get the last entry in.

You can also get some lucky charms and fortune slips while you’re here.

KINKAKU-JI 1 Kinkakujicho, Kita Ward, Kyoto, 603-8361, Japan

While here, we noticed some Gachapon which are Sanrio-themed pins, specifically for Kyoto. We did see more specialty pins for Tokyo which are exclusive in their respective regions. They tend to be outside souvenir shops so you can always exchange for more ¥100 coins. These pins are ¥300 (~ SGD 3) each.

For dinner, we ended up at one of Japan’s 24-hour restaurants with affordable and good meals as most restaurants aren’t open.

NAKAU – KAWARAMACHI GOJO Japan, 〒600-8020 Kyoto, Shimogyo Ward, Mikagedomaecho, 843 清水ビル

DAY 6 [LORIMER KYOTO, FUSHIMI INARI SHRINE, HANAYA – FUSHIMI INARI TAISHA, HOKAN-JI TEMPLE, CHOSEI, KIMOMIZU-DERA, GYUKATSU KYOTO KATSUGYU (KIYOMIZU GOJOZAKA), UME-YU

We made reservations the day before for this breakfast spot. They specialise in fish and are very Instagrammable.

LORIMER KYOTO 143 Hashizumecho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, 600-8187, Japan

How can one visit Kyoto without coming to Fushimi Inari Shrine? Here, we made some prayers and got some fortune sticks. We also got some lucky charms that encompass blessings for the intended recipient.

Tip: To get better photos, either be patient and let others pass or climb higher.

FUSHIMI INARI SHRINE 68 Fukakusa Yabunouchicho, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, 612-0882, Japan

Midway climb, we had some snacks and tea as we were starting to get a bit hungry. While their matcha latte was meh. I loved their mochi with tea set and their sweet potato with ice cream is a must-have!

KANMIDOKORO TAKEYA Inariyamakanyuchi, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, 612-0805, Japan

While heading towards the train station, we stopped by a local Japanese restaurant, HANAYA – FUSHIMI INARI TAISHA. Diners would sit on tatami mats so do remember to remove your shoes before you head to your tables!

HANAYA – FUSHIMI INARI TAISHA 1-7 Fukakusa Kaidocho, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, 612-0806, Japan

Along the way here, there were many confectionary stores along the way so you can get some souvenirs back. However, some of their made-to-order foods are quite overpriced, such as their beef sticks (which were cheaper elsewhere).

Again, lucky us we saw more Maikos and Geisha. So do remember to maintain your respect. I wasn’t sure if we could film but do avoid it if possible.

HOKAN-JI Japan, 〒605-0862 Kyoto, Higashiyama Ward, 清水八坂上町388

As Kiyomizu-dera was near Hokan Ji, we took a stroll up Sannenzaka Hill with more shops and tea houses for some snacks.

Stopping at Chosei for some dorayaki with red bean filling and three mochi looking like little chicks. This was so cute and yummy. I loved it!

(There isn’t an address that I can find on Google Maps so I think it’s a relatively new store. However, it’s along Sannenzaka Hill.)

After reaching the top of the hill, we arrived at Kiyomizu-dera. As the queue to get the tickets is relatively packed, do book beforehand to explore the grounds.

At certain times of the year, there are special light-ups during Spring, Summer, and Autumn. So do check out the schedule before you head there to visit at night. Otherwise, for other times of the year, they’ll close earlier in the day.

KIYOMIZU-DERA 1 Chome-294 Kiyomizu, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0862, Japan

We were getting a bit hungry (although we’ve been snacking throughout). So we headed for some Gyukatsu which is one of my favourite meals in Japan! So you can either eat it as it is or if it’s too rare for you, cook it on the little stone stove that they provide.

GYUKATSU KYOTO KATSUGYU (KIYOMIZU GOJOZAKA) 6 Chome-583 Gojobashihigashi, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0846, Japan

To end off the night after a long few days of walk, we headed to the bathhouse near our place to relax. If you want to, you can bring all your soap and bath there. This place is generally accepting of those with tattoos, there weren’t many restrictions. No pictures for obvious reasons!

UME-YU 175 Iwatakicho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, 600-8115, Japan

TOKYO

DAY 7 [KAWAMA CAFE, KAMO RIVER, TRAVEL TO TOKYO, TSUKADA SHABU SHABU, SHIBUYA SKY]

We started our day with some ‘rice burgers’ which were delicious and energising. It was a cute little cafe that faced the Kamo River. In spring, you could even spy some cherry blossoms!

KAWAMA CAFE 141-2 Toichicho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, 600-8111, Japan

We took a quick stroll along Kamo River just behind Kawama Cafe before heading back to our Airbnb to check out.

We were travelling to Tokyo today so we also got some bento to go along with our trip. They can be purchased just below the train tracks in Kyoto Station. I’m not sure about this, but I believe you can get them to heat the food up for you. Be sure to book the tickets for the left side to see Mount Fuji on a good day!

Tip: If traveling with pieces of luggage by train, remember to book seats in advance for yourself and your luggage. You’ll get seats at the back of the train with your luggage behind your seat. There is overhead luggage storage but they are good enough for smaller luggage.

I won’t recommend the Airbnb that we booked as we found the place a bit dodgy and didn’t find it very safe.

As we arrived in Tokyo, close to dinner time and had tickets to go up Shibuya Sky around 8:30pm, we headed for Shibuya Scramble Square.

We originally wanted to head to Moheji, also on the same floor but the queue was too long. And what they say about the queue may be right, the food is good.

So, we decided to queue concurrently, also for the Shabu Shabu next door and that turned out to be a good decision as their food was so good.

I got a beef set (¥5000 (~SGD 50). We were seated in front of their dry kitchen and got to see the full process of how they sliced the meat and carefully plated it. As it is individual pots, you can enjoy theDessert was sphere-shaped jelly served with some sweet sauce which was so good.

Tip: If you show them your tickets up Shibuya Sky, you get a free cocktail/ soft drink! Other restaurants may also be participating in this special promo as well, so do check with the staff.

TSUKADA SHABU SHABU Japan, 〒150-0002 Tokyo, Shibuya City, Shibuya, 2 Chome−24−12 渋谷スクランブルスクエア 12F スクランブルスクエア 12F Shibuya Scramble Square Level 12

Finally, we went up Shibuya Sky where we could also see the famous Shibuya Crossing. I’d recommend wearing more windproof clothes as it can get cold up there with the strong winds.

That being said, you are to leave all your belongings in the lockers provided (don’t worry, your coin will be refunded back to you when you retrieve your items). So don’t bring any tripods, hats, or scarves for going up Shibuya Sky unless you can secure the items.

For the best viewing, head for sunset timing so you get both day and night views. I wasn’t able to arrive so early so just having the night view had to suffice. There is a small light show if you get to the rooftop and you can relax there as well (when you can brave the cold). otherwise, head there early in the morning when everyone hasn’t gotten up to explore the place on your own.

SHIBUYA SKY Japan, 〒150-6145 Tokyo, Shibuya City, Shibuya, 2 Chome−24−12 14階・45階・46階・屋上

DAY 8 [DISNEYSEA]

We headed to DisneySea pretty early, around 7:45am and reached around 7:45am then got in at 9am sharp. By the time we arrived, there was already a massive queue.

First thing when you enter is to scan the tickets into your app. If you are travelling with companions, scan them all into one device. Then get the free priority pass which you can find out more info here.

Basically you can get more if you take the rides or after 2(?) hours so the tickets can overlap. There’s an allocated time slot which you have to enter with their ‘priority pass’. We managed to secure tickets for

  1. Raging Spirits
  2. Nemo and Friends Sea rider. This queue goes relatively quick as each experience is about 20 minutes.
  3. 20000 leagues under the sea was not so worth it for us since we could barely see anything

If the premier access is within your budget, then go for it, it saves you lots of time on the bigger rides which are often more popular.

Go for the big rides first.

  1. Indiana jones crystal
  2. Tower of terror
  3. Journey to the centre of the earth.
  4. Raging spirits
  5. Toy Story Mania is suitable for kids too but it was well worth the queue so I’ve included it in the list.

Unfortunately the Indiana jones and the journey to the centre of the earth was closed by the time we had time to queue for it. So head here first when you enter the park. Tower of Terror’s queue was a good 2 to 2.5 hours so we got a bit of quick bites while in the queue.

As we waited for the time slot for raging spirits, we headed Aquatopia and managed to play it twice. In between, getting the express trains to travel the park.

The main parade was at the Centre of the park around 7pm while the fireworks went off at 8:30pm. Opening hours while I was there was between 9am and 9pm.

We had dinner at their Italian restaurant and got the alien mochi at Zambini Brothers Restaurant. Throughout the day, we also got things like their popcorn and churros which different vendors have different flavours.

Bonus Tip: We made friends with their kind cast members and you can too!

DISNEYSEA 1-13 Maihama, Urayasu, Chiba 279-8511, Japan

DAY 9 [KIMONO, NAMARA, MATCHA SWEETS, SENSO-JI, KIMURA NINGYŌYAKI, CHACHA FUTATSUME, YOROSHI COSMETICS, ICHIRAN ASAKUSA, TOKYO CHARACTER STREET]

Situated near the train station, we booked this rental a few days ago on Klook. Their lady boss was very welcoming and chat with us throughout the experience and explaining to us what the purpose of each layer is.

We got to choose the ‘main piece’, collar, belt and a bag. And choose from more than 10 hairstyles. She mentioned that the front and back of your belt had to match the ‘main piece’.

KYOTO KIMONO RENTAL WARGO ASAKUSA SHOP Japan, 〒111-0032 Tokyo, Taito City, Asakusa, 2 Chome−6−7 楽天地浅草ビル 4階

We were hungry by the time we got our hair and outfit done. So we headed to the nearby local ramen place for a good bowl of noodles. A hidden gem this place is!

NAMARA なまら 浅草西参道店 2 Chome-7-13 Asakusa, Taito City, Tokyo 111-0032, Japan

We stopped by to get some matcha for some drinks and my friends said that this was one of the best matcha that they had in Japan. They also got some matcha noodles here!

MATCHA SWEETS KAMINARI-ISSA 2 Chome-7-3 Asakusa, Taito City, Tokyo 111-0032, Japan

We waddled over to the temple and made a few prayers here. You can take your fortune slips just outside and keep the good ones. If they aren’t good, tie them up on the rack and leave them behind. I didn’t do one because I’ve already done it once at Fushimi Inari in Kyoto.

SENSO-JI 2 Chome-3-1 Asakusa, Taito City, Tokyo 111-0032, Japan

We walked down Nakamise-dori Street 仲見世商店街, just in front of Sensoji Temple. There were so many foods and we were spoilt for choice. Our first stop was to get a Japanese sweets (“人形焼”) which looked to me in Chinese as ‘baked human shaped’ and piqued my interest. Thankfully it is much more humane and even more yummy than it sounds.

It the Kueh Bahulu (sponge cake) with red paste inside.

KIMURA NINGYŌYAKI 2 Chome-3-1 Asakusa, Taito City, Tokyo 111-0032, Japan

Along the way, we got some Strawberry Daifuku as well. Can’t get enough of their mochi here.

The highlight of the Matcha Icecream shop. Unlike just a normal icecream, it was filled with other ingredients such as greentea chestnut which gave that noodle shape, lemon marmalade, mashed bean paste, sponge cake and that was topped with gold flakes.

CHACHA FUTATSUME Japan, 〒111-0032 Tokyo, Taito City, Asakusa, 1 Chome−37−6 ライオンズマンション雷門 103

I also stumbled across this cosmetics shop selling lots of cosmetics. What intrigued me was that their lotion bottles all come with different designs. Each design for each day of the year which makes a great souvenirs to bring back! You can choose in between the lip balm or the lotion. I’ve also got some scent sachets to get for my friends to hang in their bags or even their wardrobes.

YOROSHI COSMETICS 1 Chome-18-1 Asakusa, Taito City, Tokyo 111-0032, Japan

Finally, after walking around the area, we stopped by this store, Yanagi Chaya. If you’re a matcha snob, you might not like this as it is milky more than tea like. For me, I got the Houjicha latte and love that the tea helps to lighten the heaviness of the milk.

YANAGI CHAYA Japan, 〒111-0032 Tokyo, Taito City, Asakusa, 1 Chome−30−6 橋本ビル 1F

After returning our kimonos, we headed for some famous Ichiran, as raved by everyone that’s in Japan. What I like about it is that I can choose the thickness of the broth and the noodles, add or minus the condiments. It’s quite the customisable experience. But my friends mentioned that this branch was not the best. Other branches taste much better so Ichiran is a must try but maybe not in Asakusa.

ICHIRAN ASAKUSA Japan, 〒111-0032 Tokyo, Taito City, Asakusa, 1 Chome−1−16 HK浅草ビル B1F

To end off the night, we headed to the Tokyo Character Street at Tokyo Station before they closed at 8:30pm. You can find all your favourite characters here, including Ultraman!

TOKYO CHARACTER STREET Japan, 〒100-0005 Tokyo, Chiyoda City, Marunouchi, 1 Chome−9−1 東京駅一番街 B1

DAY 10 [DAY TRIP TO FUJI, IKEDA-YA TEASTORE, DISNEY AND DAISO]

We booked this under Klook. And had our meet up in Shinjuku Station. However, you can also choose your pickup at Tokyo Station.

On our way to the first stop, our guide introduced himself as Chow and gave us quick Japanese lessons, breaking the ice of the group.

Our first stop of the day was travelling towards Chureito Pagoda for that iconic view. We were given 1 hour to explore. We couldn’t see so half of us decided not to climb the full 398 steps as the clouds were covering Mount Fuji. So they went for some udon which was good. I continued the long climb which took 20 min max and saw a great view of the town below us.

CHUREITO PAGODA 2-chome-4-1 Asama, Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi 403-0011, Japan

After a quick drive, we spent roughly 15 minutes at this famous straight with supposed good view of Mount Fuji. However for us, Mount Fuji was feeling shy in the morning so we only saw the beautiful road. There are traffic marshals so do head to another street with similar views. Do remember to be careful and watch out for cars when you’re taking the photos!

SHIMOYOSHIDA HONCHO STREET 3 Chome-5 Shimoyoshida, Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi 403-0004, Japan

After another 15 minutes drive, we spent another hour at Oshino Hakkai where there are food spots for quick snacks. There’s a place in the middle for you to drink the water from Mt Fuji and you can bring your own bottle. Else you can purchase one empty one at the store. We got some mugwort mochi and fish cakes. I loved the fish cake with cheese while my friends got the potato one and other flavours.

We finally arrived at Lake Kawaguchi, we parked near Oishi Park Parking Lot. we were given another hour to explore around the lake, waiting patiently for the clouds to pass and saw a glimpse of Mount Fuji.

The store nearby, which I believe should be Oishi Park Cafe, sold very yummy muscat grape biscuits.

The last part of the journey was to where was dubbed the prettiest convenient store in the world. Again, don’t jaywalk, there are traffic marshals planted to prevent this. Do care for your own safety.

Our guide also got us some complimentary drinks here, some of the guys even got beer, so it doesn’t hurt to ask!

We spent another 2 hours to get back to the city. We were dropped off at Shinjuku Station where we were picked up. Of course if you want to change to Tokyo Station, you could request for it as well.

We had heard about this Japanese matcha tea shop in Shinjuku Station which was run by an elderly couple who are very well versed in green tea and its’ grade and the region which the tea is from as well.

We had our dinner at the udon place just down a few stores down. we got the Udon with rice ball set. Their udon taste like the instant ones we make at home but we loved their rice ball!

As we were leaving soon, we got more things from Daiso, such as their vacuum bags. It’s such a steal at ¥100 (~SGD 1)!

DAY 11 [POLÈNE, OSUSHIYASAN NO PORK TAMAGO ONIGIRI, PURIKURA – NOA, AKIBA CART JAPAN, GINZA COFFEE SHOP, BARBACOA CHURRASCARIA AOYAMA]

Having only just three stores in the world. I had to make my way over to the newly opened Polène Tokyo.

It opens Thursdays to Mondays from 11am to 7pm and are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. However, the snaking queue starts since 10:30am. So be there earlier to get the bags you want! The Sales Assistant helping me out with the bags told me that their stock usually comes in on Monday and some Thursday. So those days are the best to ensure you get what you went for!

For lunch we went to this cute little place, getting some Onigiri.

Have you been to Japan if you haven’t squeezed in the photo booth and take photos which you could decorate and print out. So, we headed towards Harajuku to find Purikura. There were so many booths which you can try. Of course, we tried one and thought our eyes were way too wide. But that’s all part of the fun of taking the photos!

Our main highlight of the day was to take the karting through the streets of Tokyo. Ours took place in Akihabara. However, there are many other providers across Japan.

We booked the karting with Rakuten here. This package came with free outfits which you can chose from their racks. Do be sure to be there earlier to choose the character that you love!

There are gloves provided so wear them cause your fingers will get very cold. Sunnies are optional but I personally think it’s very important because of the glare from the sun While you drive.

if you’re able to, try to sit closer to the driver so you can step on the gas a bit and it’s not as frazzling as sitting in the back as you’ll have to try to keep up with the rest of the pack. Our group encountered unfriendly drivers who split our group up. Also, There is fumes coming out of the car exhaust ahead, more if you’re in the back.

For bigger groups, book at least 2 months in advance. They take 5 drivers out per time. my friend and I got split up as we didn’t book early enough. On Rakuten, we could only book one at a time and was given a confirmation by the next day. You should know the outcome of the book confirmation if you

I had a small dinner with my friends here where we saw some Omu rice. I enjoyed their omurice but their cheesecake was not as light and fluffy as I expected. I did enjoy their waffles though.

I was meeting another group of friends for dinner so we headed towards Omotesando. We were going to go to Kintan for some Shabu Shabu as we heard good reviews about the place but it was fully booked. So I’d recommend making some reservations.

Instead, we headed over nearby for some brazilian food. It is all you can eat for ¥8k (~ SGD 80). There is free flow salads, deserts. And there are different cuts of meat, beef, chicken and pork. Servers will bring out fresh skewers and slice them into your plates. Definitely a must go spot if you’re looking for something fancy and different from the usual asian food. I especially loved their dessert.

DAY 12 [FLYING BACK TO SINGAPORE]

Today, we had to check out at 10am. On our way to the train station, we did more shopping.

Do ensure that you leave your place earlier as it took us almost 2 hours to reach Narita Airport.

We had lunch at the airport. I decided to go for some tonkatsu, as I haven’t eaten that while I was in Japan.

SABOTEN NARITA AIRPORT TERMINAL 1 SHOP Japan, 〒286-0111 Chiba, Narita, Sanrizuka, 1−1 第 1PTB 中央 ビル 新館 4 階 御料 牧場

I also got perfume at My Only Fragrance. You can custom make perfume or get one of their pre-made. For 1000 yen extra, you can change it to eau de perfum ¥5500 (~ SGD 55) from eau de toilette ¥4500 (~ SGD 45) for longer lasting scent. I got the No. 13 which was the scent that was floating around the shop.

I also got some snacks such as Tokyo Banana, at the store. If you’re bringing it back as gifts, don’t buy them anywhere else. Just get them at the airport as they’ll have a slightly longer shelf life.

Finally, I’ve also gotten a pair of shoes from ABC as there were some promo going on. Before we checked in.

CONCLUSION

And that concludes the 12 days 11 nights trip to Japan. This guide is great for those who are visiting Japan for the first time and love going theme parks as well. Let me know down in the comment some of the must-visit places that I didn’t mention in the comments!
