Bread. One of the main staples in Singapore and many other places across the world. This is why there are so many variations, from baguettes to sourdough to pita bread.
But one of my favourites is the loafy Asian-styled bread which can be bought from local supermarkets. But this review will be a little more special as I got it from a renowned bakery!
But before that, let’s tell you more about my simple criteria which I have when it comes to trying bread.
- Texture: It has to be doughy so that it is chewy.
- Soft and Airy
- Fragrant: In terms of smell and taste.
SUGAR TOAST
Sugar Toast is a household name originally from China, with more than 130 stores, was established in 2017. Sugar Toast announced their opening in Singapore in late 2020 and I finally got around to getting it after seeing their pretty white paper bags with their loaves in them.
Despite their name, they only have one sugar toast, Brown Sugar Toast. In Singapore’s branch, there are 12 flavours of handmade toasts, most of them rather unconventional. The signature flavours include:
- Original Toast
- Cranberry Toast
- Dark Chocolate Toast
- Purple Sweet Potato Toast
- Salted Cheese Toast
Other flavours:
- Matcha Toast
- Dragon Fruit Walnut Toast
- Matcha Red Bean Toast
- Rainbow Cranberry Toast
- White Chocolate Matcha Toast
- Souffle Toast
- Red Bean Toast
- Chicken Floss Toast
- Brown Sugar Toast
- Cheese Crown [NEW!] – SGD15.90
All the Toasts are priced at SGD 10.90 per loaf. There are five 2cm thick slices in a loaf.
Unlike traditional local bakeries, bread is prepacked, displayed and sold. So you won’t be able to walk into the store. But, if you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the baking process through the window at the back.
Sugar Toast’s loaves are made fresh, by hand every day. Even all the coloured bread is made with all-natural ingredients, without any preservatives. Hence, each loaf can only be kept for up to 4 days at room temperature.
Their loaves undergo an intensive 4 hours process which includes the intricate braiding of the bread dough during the kneading stage. After the fresh loaves are baked, they are packaged into beautiful paper bags.
TASTE TEST
I decided to get the common Dark Chocolate Loaf which has a generous amount of dark chocolate in the bread.
The fragrant dark chocolate loft does not seem very soft nor airy at first touch. However, after the first bite, you’ll realize that this bread is soft and taste so amazing. The milkiness from the bread perfectly complements the chocolate. The chocolate taste is also not too overpowering such that you can’t taste the sweetness from the bread. Although it requires a bit more jaw work, the texture of the loaf is exactly what I love, so very chewy.
Rating: 8/10.
Since there are so many flavours, there is bound to be one that you love. Rainbow Cranberry is well-loved for the ones who prefer fruitier bread. As for Matcha lovers, you’ll be spoilt for choices with the Matcha, Match Red Bean and White Chocolate Matcha flavoured bread. Although, for the Original, it would make more sense to stick to our everyday gardenia or sunshine bread from the supermarkets which are more price friendly.
CONCLUSION
As someone who loves to try all sorts of bread, this chewy bread is on top of my list to repurchase. However, due to the price point, it can be difficult to come back for seconds. But I’d say, it is worth it after such a long strenuous process of crafting the bread. And, of course, if you’re after the unique flavours. Trust me, you’ll want to at least give it a chance. It is worth all the carbs.
