HOW TO MIGRATE INTO A NEW BUJO

by | May 31, 2021 | BULLET JOURNAL, SELF CARE | 0 comments

And your girl is back at reminding you how fast time flies! The final month in the first half of the year. How is everyone doing so far in 2021?

I started BUJO-ing in 2016 and I still love how personalised and creative this planner system is. It has become such a huge, and I mean HUGE part of my life. I feel so much more productive and organize with it.

Each year, I think of all the different spreads I want to incorporate, spreads I want to keep. There are always 526417873852082 things that I wanted to change each time I started my journal.

For the last 5 or so years, I’ve never once migrated into another Journal in the middle of the year. Which came to me as a surprise since I’ve only used my journal for only 5 months this year.

This year is a special year for me since it is the first time migrating into a new journal in the middle of the year. I’d be honest, migrating into a brand new journal – though very exciting – was quite overwhelming. There are so many questions.

  • Which spreads do I keep and which do I not? Do I really need these spreads? (I love them all!!)
  • Should I change the layout of those spreads or just keep them the way they are?
  • What style do I want for my new journal?

Well, been there, done that. I’m here to spark your inner creativity and answer those thoughts of yours!

1. REVIEW YOUR BUJO SETUP

On a page in your current journal, create 2 columns.

  • Old Spreads (What worked for you in your current setup. You may skip this if you’re just starting out!)
  • New Spreads (Ideas you have throughout the year. This includes Inspiration gathered from the web)

These two lists will be plenty to help you out when you are reorganizing potential spreads in your new journal. It only shows what you really like and ignore those spreads that made you feel “eh, I can do without that”. Say Buh-Bye! For beginners, simply skip this part.

For both beginners and current journalers, gather as much inspiration as you can remember! Personally, I love using Pinterest and Instagram as a way of gathering ideas. Another tip is to start your own Board on Pinterest or Saved Collections on Instagram. It will definitely come in handy so you never forget that gorgeous spread that you want to try out in the future.

2. REORGANISE YOUR LISTS

Time to bring out that new beautiful journal that you can’t wait to start on! If you’ve never Bullet Journalled before, fret not! You can just use any journal, notebooks which are lined, grid or dotted. I prefer mine to be dotted so the lines are not visible in my spreads.

Take those lists and reorganize them in the sequence in which you will be creating the spreads on your new journal.

For instance, I reorganized them based on categories.

  • Basic Spreads (2021 Cover Page, Grid Spacing, Quote, Future Log)
  • Goals (Personal, Business and Blog)
  • Ideas (Business and Blog)
  • Hobbies (Stocks, F1 Race Calendar)
  • Keep Track (Subscriptions, Last I…, Password Hints -Because I forget… a lot, Library)
  • BucketList (Singapore, Australia and Abroad)
  • Self Care (About me, Affirmations, Morning and Night Routines, Period Tracker, The little things)

All these categories will vary from person to person, so don’t worry if your spreads do not match mine! It should be all about you and what you need 😉

You may notice at this stage, some of your ideas may not be what you really need and it is perfectly okay to not include them in your new journal. Some may even opt to merge some of the spreads. For example, I merged my birthday list with my future log.

3. GET STARTED

Using the sequence that you have curated in step 2, start by creating your basic spreads and most on from there. This is the lengthiest part of the 3 steps but the satisfaction at the end of it. Whew, so worth it!

This is also the step to get creative about the titles of your page. Not a necessary step but a very fun one to try out. For instance, I named my “Braindump”, “Diamonds in a Rough” because that is exactly what they are, imo that is! 😂

| Huge Reminder: Do what works for you! Only then can you achieve your objectives and find joy in the process 😇

Soooo it is not so difficult if we break it down into 3 simple steps, isn’t it? I hope this guide has helped you in migrating to a new journal. What an exciting adventure that is, seeing the old one getting filled up. And for our new journalers, welcome to this awesome community and I can’t wait to see what you can create!
